Plastic Free July

Plastic Free July

We think going plastic free is something to focus on all year round, but it's great to have this reminder of how important the topic is. Here's our review of Plastic Free July at Living Memorial.

Going plastic free is much harder than it first appears, but every small change or swap we make shows manufacturers and shops that we do not want plastic to dominate our world.

At Living Memorial we have been working hard to find ways to reduce our plastic use, here's what we've been up to in July:

  • reviewed our packaging, making sure it is fully reuseable and recyclable in household waste.
  • reviewed our administrative procedures, changing our printer to one that doesn't need plastic cartridges.
  • reviewed how we send soil samples, to see if there is a plastic free alternative available - ongoing research to be done.

There is always room for improvement, even encouraging our staff to bring a packed lunch from home instead of buying a plastic wrapped sandwich at the petrol station!

Small swaps are usually the best way to make long term changes. Just finding out the sources of plastic in our homes and work places can help us to see what changes we can begin.

Moving from soap dispensers in plastic bottles to soap bars might be a simple option, it may also save money! Looking at materials that are able to be more easily recycled is also a easy swap. Soft drinks in cans rather than bottles, toilet rolls wrapped in paper instead of plastic.

We can all make an impact, and demand the world we'd like to see by spending our money to match our values whenever possible.
